Fashion Icon: Keith Richards

Our newest feature here at Well Dressed Wes is profiling a male and female fashion icon each week. We will try to pick people whose personal styles are original and could function as inspiration for someone working with a college budget. Our first male icon is the legendary guitarist of the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards.

Keith has been the fashion face of rock & roll since the 1960s and continues to be a constant source of inspiration for the fashion world. It is Keith, not Kate Moss, who we really have to thank for drainpipe trousers. And of course, the pirate character Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) borrows Keith's kohl-rimmed eyes, skull rings, trinket-strewn hair and general swagger.

Keith has had one form or another of a distinct highwayman-cum-gypsy core style over the decades, but our personal favorite incarnation was Keith during the late 60s-early 70s, particularly during the Stones' "exile" to Villa Nellcôte in the South of France. The photos of Keith from this time, taken by Dominique Tarlé, are especially fabulous.

Project Runway - Review

SPOILERS for the Season Finale

Well, Jeffrey is innocent! Truth be told I was relieved at the decision. His collection looked nothing short of spectacular, and had Jeffrey been unable to show at Olympus it would have been a travesty. His emotional breakdown helped him earn Brownie Points with me--it's nice to see someone who works so hard at appearing badass have a moment of real emotion.

That said, Uli was a little troublemaker. She had no reason to accuse Laura of wanting to make Jeffrey cry.

I found myself very moved by Tim Gunn's emotional farewell to the designers. Tim Gunn is, as I've stated before, my favorite television personality and I feel he is a very real rock and motivator for these designers.

Now, for the final collections.

Michael: I liked his collection way better than the judges did. I was particularly shocked that Michael Kors didn't appreciate it more, as much of the collection reminded me of Kors' own resortwear. But I was disappointed in Michael's inability to defend his work. When they called his beaded safari dress over the top, I wanted him to bring up Gallion, Gaultier and other so-called "over the top" designers. Oh well. Like Daniel Vasovic, my favorite last season, the young ones never win. I would kill for Michael's little orange cocktail dress.

Laura: This woman knows how to dress the female form. Every outfit was elegant, sophisticated and gorgeous to look at. Innovative it was not. Still, I appreciate Laura ("Bad Mommy" as Keith liked to call her) as a working mother who has managed to create a very sexy collection. But then again, like my fashion icon Lisa Eisner, I love feathers!

Uli: Although I appreciate Uli's tropical aesthetic, it's never been quite my thing. That said, I really loved her collection. Every single piece was completely wearable, and much of the draping and construction was truly innovative. The color palate could have been better, as Kors pointed out.

Jeffrey: By far the best collection. The crowning cherry on top was his little green and white striped dress with zipper detailing. I also loved his inspiration (Japanese ghost stories) and his color palate. As someone who worships Vivienne Westwood I couldn't not love nearly every item on the runway.

THE VERDICT! Well, Jeffrey won! I'm happy with the decision...if only because now I know Jeffrey won't shoot up due to defeat (low blow, I'm sorry). I think all three other designers will have no problem getting work, particularly my beloved Michael who a mid-show poll indicated is still an audience favorite. But I must admit I'm thrilled the curmudgeonly, tattooed Jeffrey won and I wish him the best.

Shit. Now what do I do until next season? Suppose I will have to satisfy myself with the Flavor of Love 2 reunion special in two weeks. Auf Wiedersehen!

It was a fashion-meets-cinema extravaganza, to say the least! The day started with us being photographed while waiting outside Cafe Gitane for Dutch Elle Girl's street style section. We then dressed accordingly and headed to the Walter Reade Theatre for the screening of "Marie Antoinette" (it was Shane's second viewing, and Maude's third!). This is not a movie review blog, but suffice it to say it is our favorite film of the year, and anyone interested in fashion history MUST see it for the incredible work of Milena Canonero. The afterparty was fabulous: champagne, foie gras, caviar and pastries provided by La Durée, the legendary Parisian confectioner. We topped off the night hanging out with Jamie Dornan and Rose Byrne out on the town, and collapsed in bed at the Mercer Hotel at 5am. The next day we checked out our favorite stores in Soho (Prada, A.P.C., Agnes B., Louis Vuitton, Agent Provocateur), then had drinks with Jamie that night, and were joined by models Gemma Ward, Lily Aldridge and Helen Christensen. It was the perfect fashion finish to our magical New York City (by way of Versailles) weekend.

Daytime Fashion

Some people have commented on the blog, and some people have asked us directly: "Why don't you take photos during the day?" Well, the answer is not very exciting: we are very busy college students. It would be pretty impossible to take photos each day given our schedules. As a compromise, from now on we are going to publish a weekly collection of our favorite looks caught around campus during class hours. This is the first installment, and we will try to update every Wednesday or Thursday.

Project Runway - Review

SPOILERS for Oct. 11th's show

I'm making this review brief because A.) there's a lot of photos to publish and B.) this episode BLEW. Okay, I've been thrown off by two reality finales--I thought last Sunday was the Flavor of Love 2 finale, and it wasn't. I thought tonight was the Project Runway finale, and it wasn't. WHY MUST THEY STRETCH OUT MY IMPATIENCE AND AGONY?!

Tim Gunn, who is likely my favorite TV personality ever ("Make it work!"), visited the designers to get a glimpse at their collections for the Olympus Fashion Week show. Michael didn't seem to have a good grip on his collection, only having three pieces to show Tim. I wished he hadn't wanted to go for such an on-the-money 70's look. Laura's collection bored the bejeezus out of me. Uli's collection was very her, very wearable, but not particualrly innovative. Jeffrey's collection looked the most promising, particularly a green and white candystriped dress with zipper detailing.

Laura, however, was not convinced that Jeffrey could have completely finished his collection on his own. While the other designers made alterations, finished hems and added buttons, Jeffrey sat around looking at model sheets. How can he have been completely done?

Did Jeffrey cheat? For his sake, I hope not. But my gut tells me he might have--not because I think he is incapable of such fine craftsmanship, but because he had so many other projects happening at the same time. The preview for the (sigh) real finale has me a little apprehensive. On one hand, I feel that YES, if Jeffrey cheated, he should be removed from the show. On the other hand, his collection looks like his best work to date, and it sucks to have a strong creative voice silenced.

I'd like to hear peoples' opinions on the comments--do you think Jeffrey cheated? If he did...should he be sent home?

Project Runway - Review

SPOILERS for 10/4's show

This review is going to be much shorter than the others, as the episode tonight was the reunion. Things got off to a dramatic start with the return of KEITH!!! Squirrely and wily, he continued to believe he was innocent, that those pattern books magically turned up in his room...tsk tsk.

I was so happy to see Alison return! But she had almost zero camera time. I would have loved to know what she was up to. I like Milan, too, but Alison was the one the judges really should have asked about. When they mentioned the "controversial" decision to keep Vincent and get rid of her, I expected a lot more! I think all Project Runway viewers were shocked by that decision. It's not like Vincent is even THAT amusing. Alison had more to show. I firmly believe she could have made it to the final three--or, this season, four.

An interesting moment I would have liked to have seen more of: Laura defending Jeffrey, in terms of the situation with Angela's mom. Yes, Jeffrey was unnecessarily cruel, but Angela's mom (like Angela) was beyond passive aggressive.

Michael won the fan favorite award of $10,000! Does anyone remember who won the previous years? I hope it's not some sort of curse. I adore Michael and firmly believe he is the most exciting designer.

Very much looking forward to next week's finale, with all four designers showing! Maybe people can post comments on who they think should win? My vote's Michael Knight! The name even sounds like it'd be a great label. Come on!

Project Runway - Review

SPOILERS for 9/27's show.

It was down to the final four: Uli, Jeffrey, Laura and my darling Michael. I play favorites, I must admit. Uli is sweet and her designs are fun, flirty and very tropical--but this makes them a bit one-note. Jeffrey has ruined his character for me by constantly bad-mouthing his fellow designers. It's especially upsetting when he rips on other peoples' design when his own are lackluster at best. That said, I admire his edgy taste and innovative compositions, particularly his Vivienne Westwood-esque couture gown. Laura's style is as constant as Uli's: she likes a black and white palate, classic cuts and shapes, and a tried and true form of fashion sophistication. The result is that all her clothes look good, but not original. Then there is Michael. His outfits have always been well-presented (as Michael Kors pointed out on tonight's episode). He knows how to flatter the female body. But his clothes are not particularly "out there." They have innovation but only so much.

Tonight's challenge: create an outfit that represents YOU, with no creative restrictions and a $250.00 budget! This free form challenge actually put more pressure on the designers, many of whom (like Uli) work better with guidelines. Uli set out to create one of her typical bohemian gowns. Jeffrey decided to show his "romantic side." Laura decided to go with her usual glamour in the form of a cocktail dress. Michael, after hours of frustration, decided to make an evening gown.

Now, I think Jeffrey is bloody talented (even if his style is a little faux rock star for my taste), but he is not racking up any karma points with his constant badmouthing of the other designers. Since Day 1 he has demonstrated a complete inability to shut up. It's arrogant and annoying, and makes me less inclined to root for him. I was very impressed by Uli's beadwork. Michael's dress was a beautiful color, but the neck was looking iffy. Laura's dress was very, well, Laura. Cute, wearable, but not something new.

The designers' time was cut in half when they were told they'd have to photograph their models in their outifts. This seemed pretty absurd. I personally feel some of the thinktanks behind Project Runway got a little bored this season.

The final show was surprising. Uli made the most wearable dress. Her model looked amazing in it. Yes, it was bohemian and Miami-ish, like everything she's made, but the shape and craftsmanship had to be commended. Jeffrey's dress looked "amateur" according to Michael Kors--I think he was going easy on him, because it looked like a pillowcase. Laura's dress was cute, but bland. Michael's dress was beautiful, but strangely tailored. It landed him and Jeffrey in the final two spots.

But then--THE TWIST! All four designers will be showing at Fashion Week (or *did* show, as it has already happened in real time). I'm sure this will irk previous seasons' designers to no end, but honestly it was too close to call. Eliminating either Jeffrey and Michael would have been absurd--they've consistently proved themselves as great talents and had shown greater prowess than either Uli or Laura.

Next week is the infamous Reunion Episode. The preview shows cheating Keith acting up. He's a bad egg. Looking forward to seeing some past faces. But having to deal with Angela and Vincent again does not sound appealing.

Project Runway - Review

SPOILER WARNING for 9/13's episode.

I'm a bit peeved at the producers of Project Runway. I understand that the show is supposed to be entertaining, and that this involves concocting bizarre, unrealistic challenges...but COME ON. The insanity of having to use ALL the fabric? That's just some asshole studio exec sitting behind a desk thinking, "Make them design with their feet! Yeah! I'm so clever!"

That said, I was half impressed, half appalled by the creations. The assignment was to make a cocktail dress using black and white fabric--and all the fabric had to be used, even the scraps! Retarded. Additionally, Vincent and Angela (GAG!) were invited back on to get a second chance. I would have preferred to see a designer with real talent, like Alison. Apparently, all the other viewers felt that way, too: a midshow poll showed 82% would have preferred a Alison appearance. Rumor has it Alison got the boot because Heidi Klum felt jealous. I find that to be very unlikely, as she is Heidi fuckin' Klum.

Vincent almost made something sweet, but it was too short and looked like one of those ruched swimsuits Marc Jacobs made for Louis Vuitton 2 years ago. It would have been fine were it a swimsuit competition. Vincent as a human being is a waste of space. I was annoyed to see him back and relieved to see him leave.

Angela needs to lay off the mushrooms. That's really all I have to say. I've never liked anything she's made. Although I think Jeffrey antagonized her and her mother more than was reasonable, I do really despise her style. She seems nice enough, but her taste is deplorable.

Kayne's piece wasn't so bad. I think he would have stayed if he had won more challenges in the past. I've never really liked anything he's made--it's wearable, but all very pageant-like. His personality made him a pleasure to watch--even the fabulous Tim Gunn showed emotion at his departure.

Jeffrey's piece was appalling. And I LOVE all things thigh high--but good lord. Hideous. Jeffrey sometimes makes me laugh with his angry A.A. humor, but he's also getting a little annoying.

Uli's piece was cute in shape and construction, but she keeps using the same paisley patterned fabrics, and keeps designing for hot weather. It is getting old, it shows her limits, and it's not all flattering. I would like to see something innovative from her.

Michael...oh sweet, sweet Michael. I have loved his work since Day 1 when he made a cute white dress using coffee filters! I would have worn it. I would have worn every single thing he has thusfar designed. I am happy to see him succeed and once again move on to the next level. I am ecstastic that he has done so well--each episode I wait with bated breath to see what he can produce to further himself towards Fashion Week.

Laura's dress was gorgeous! Although she's been snarky in the past (loves to make quips during the designing process), her hormonal breakdown had me rooting for her. Hey, being pregnant with 5 kids already AND being on a stressful show--well done! It's amazing she could still thread a fucking needle.

Laura won the challenge, and deservedly so. She created something sophisticated and classic, but not older or matronly. The neckline was divine, as were the subtle use of rhinestones and feathers as trim. Can't wait for next week!
